Climate Smart Agriculture requires site-specific assessments to identify suitable agricultural production technologies and practices that are shaped by specific country contexts and capacities and the particular social, economic, and environmental situation where it will be applied. Laos' agriculture must adapt to climate change while contributing to mitigate climate change. 

In Laos, Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) is integrated in our Building Income, Independence, and Empowerment for Farmers (BIIE) rice project in Khammouane Province. This project assesses, defines and applies adaptation and mitigation initiatives at the production and post-harvest levels of the value chain. The addition of CSA to the BIIE project will test the integration of CSA at the enterprise level and how rice mills applying the Inclusive Business approach can make themselves and their supply chains more "climate proof". 

In Khammouane, the project works with five villages, 302 households and an agricultural area of 610 hectares. Initial research has shown that farmers are adapting to climate change and trying to overcome the impacts. But they still have insufficient knowledge, experience and financial support. It is very crucial to improve the skills and technological knowledge such as soil quality management, water management, livestock and poultry management, pest and disease control. It is also crucial to provided access to knowledge and information of climate change.

With the CSA project, SNV strengthens its value chain work by integrating climate change in the agricultural sector in Asia. The multi-country programme also runs in Bhutan, Cambodia and Nepal.
