Overall Project Background

The Dutch government, through the Directorate General for International Cooperation (DGIS), is supporting efforts to improve food security and sustainable soil fertility management as part of its sustainable development agenda. In this context, a consortium composed of IFDC, SNV, and Wageningen University (WUR) received funding to implement the Soil Values Program (2024–2033).

The program aims to sustainably manage soil fertility and health to increase agricultural productivity while strengthening the resilience of smallholder farmers in the Sahel, including women, men, youth, and other underserved groups, in the face of climate change.

Soil Values focuses on three main axes of change:

  • Agroecology
  • Inclusive market development (markets and finance)
  • Enabling environment (institutions and policies)

The consortium collaborates with several international research institutions, including IITA, CIFOR-ICRAF, ISRIC, and IWMI, to support program implementation.

Key intervention areas include:

  • Bundling: Developing integrated technological packages combining agronomic and socio-economic solutions for sustainable soil management.
  • Integrate: Promoting participatory landscape and watershed management.
  • Brokering : Facilitating financial mechanisms to support farmers and agro-pastoralists.
  • Convening: Supporting policy dialogue to create an enabling environment for sustainable soil fertility practices.
  • Scoping & learning: Encouraging innovation, learning, and knowledge development throughout the program.

In the implementation of the Soil Values program, SNV is responsible for Intervention Area 2: “Integration of Community and Landscape Approaches in Soil Fertility Management.” This intervention aims to harmonize community-based land development practices with integrated watershed management approaches. It focuses on combining local agroecological and hydrological knowledge with nature-based inputs and complementary external solutions to enhance soil fertility and conserve water resources.
