We are currently looking for Project Field Officer (Agroforestry), Full-time, based in Rantauprapat - Labuhanbatu district to support implementation of Biodiverse and Inclusive Palm Oil Sustainability (BIPOSC) project.
BIPOSC Project
The BIPOSC project aims to achieve sustainable palm oil supply chain through the implementation of regenerative agriculture practices, locally adapted agroforestry model, and ecosystem protection. Ultimately, we aim to move towards deforestation-free palm oil supply chain. The project encourages sustainable practices in the palm oil supply chain by enhancing the capacity of smallholder farmers and strengthening the institutional framework of farmers association.
Through capacity building and technical assistance, we promote the adoption of regenerative agriculture practices that will improve soil health, preserve biodiversity, and better water resource management. Moreover, we encourage the agroforestry model that integrated the palm oil plant with local commodity to improve farmer livelihood.
The project is developing the agroforestry systems for palm oil which will be follow by the numbers of farmers who will adopt the agroforestry models, maintain the 20 hectares of demonstration plot, nurseries, non-palm oil agroforestry in the buffer zone, as well as the management of watershed in the farmers plots.
The agroforestry pilot programs will design to be adjusted to local commodity and palm oil, in anticipate to Ganoderma and feeling the gap of replanting process. The initial assessment will be conducted, to identify the possibility of establishment of the next 20 ha of demo plot agroforestry in the new intervention area and keep the established demo plot maintain properly based on the 5 models recommended, to explore their suitability, needs, and market potential. On the other hand, SNV would also establish the demo plot of watershed, in order to educate the farmers who has the plot in the riverbank, by implementing integrated strategies, that would provide ecological, economic and social benefit.
SNV also responsible to identify and choose local service providers from a group, including farmer champions, local traders, farmer organizations, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and women groups. These selected individuals and organizations will receive training and support to develop a sustainable business model using SNV’s Institutional and Business Development training modules. This might involve producing sustainable palm oil by regenerative agriculture approach.
Job Description
The Project Field Officer works to ensure the (quality of the) service delivery to the client or user community. Executes the local delivery of the project conform advice given by the advisor(s)/ project manager and conform SNV procedures and guidelines, making sure timelines and project standards are met.
Key Responsibilities
Service and process delivery
- Support training delivery with village facilitators for 2,500 smallholder farmers on agroforestry models and adoption.
- Provide regular field-based technical assistance, demonstrations, and farmer guidance.
- Maintain and monitor the five recommended palm-oil agroforestry models and demonstration plots.
- Assist in achieving 250 hectares of agroforestry adoption by farmers.
- Develop and maintain riverbank agroforestry demo plots, including SOP preparation under guidance of the agroforestry adviser.
- Conduct joint field assessments with the agroforestry adviser and watershed/afroforestry consultants.
- Work with communities and facilitators to promote non–palm oil GAP for alternative livelihoods in buffer zones area.
- Support communities in buffer zones toward establishing community conservation agreements.
Internal and external communication
- Collaborate with internal teams to ensure alignment on project goals, timelines, and deliverables.
- Provide regular progress updates and highlight challenges during project operations committee meetings with partners and donors.
- Facilitate cross-department coordination to integrate agroforestry activities across programs.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with government, companies, partners, communities, and local NGOs.
- Engage farmers, community leaders, and local stakeholders to promote agroforestry and secure participation.
- Represent the organization in agroforestry, sustainable agriculture, and watershed management meetings, workshops, and conferences.
Project data handling
- Develop and implement standard protocols for agroforestry data collection across project sites.
- Oversee accurate and timely field data collection on farm practices, adoption rates, and environmental impacts.
- Manage and maintain organized, updated project databases for easy access by relevant stakeholders.
Process improvement
- Support the Project Manager and Adviser Agroforestry in monitoring the quality-of-service delivery and effectiveness of applied methodology.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant area (Agriculture, Agribusiness, Agroforestry)
- Minimum 3 years’ work experience in relevant topics, e.g., community development, agroforestry initiatives, agribusiness in Palm Oil.
- Experienced in working with local organisations, including local CSO, farmers associations/cooperatives, local businesses
- Experienced in facilitating training/workshop with diverse participants’ background
- Good representation and interpersonal skills, ability to liaise with partners and government officials
- Must be prepared for frequent field travel, including extended visits to rural and remote areas.
- Excellent computer skills: MS Word, Excel, Power Point
- Indonesian native speaker, good English command
