Advancing energy-efficient cooking in Kakuma
This case study reviews the Institutional E-Cooking Pilot, conducted by SNV and MECS with EnDev and UK Aid, in Kakuma and Kalobeyei.
Abstract
This project addressed the severe challenges posed by firewood dependency, which fuels deforestation, exacerbates environmental degradation, and poses a threat to human health. Over 50 social institutions in these areas, including schools and healthcare facilities, rely on firewood, consuming up to 100 metric tons monthly. The pilot introduced 40-litre and 20-litre Electric Pressure Cookers (EPCs), powered by solar energy, to reduce firewood use, cut operational costs, and improve health outcomes by eliminating harmful indoor smoke.
