Biodigesters for clean energy and soil health
Learn how biodigesters advance clean cooking, soil health, and climate resilience.
Abstract
SNV has more than three decades of experience in developing sustainable biodigester markets across Africa and Asia. Since 1988, over one million household biodigesters have been installed in 27 countries. Biodigesters convert organic waste into biogas for clean cooking and bio-slurry for organic fertiliser. This supports clean energy access, improves soil fertility, and strengthens climate resilience.
Globally, 2.1 billion people still lack access to clean cooking, and one-third of the world’s soils are moderately to highly degraded. Biodigesters respond to both challenges. They reduce reliance on biomass fuels, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and improve agricultural productivity by using nutrient-rich bioslurry.
The approach combines demand creation, supply development, access to finance, gender equality and social inclusion, and enabling policy frameworks. Carbon finance mechanisms and market-based models strengthen long-term sustainability.
This resource is designed for policymakers, donors, investors, and private sector actors seeking scalable, practical solutions that link clean energy, regenerative agriculture, and climate action. It offers evidence-based experience and proven models for sustainable market development.
