SNV's Position on Regenerative Agriculture
SNV’s vision is a sustainable and resilient agri food system that ensures food security and good nutrition for all while protecting economic, social and environmental foundations for the future.
Abstract
This position paper outlines SNV’s view of regenerative agriculture as a pathway to transform global agri‑food systems. It responds to urgent challenges such as soil degradation, biodiversity loss, climate impacts, and persistent inequalities in food security. The document explains how regenerative agriculture can restore ecosystem health, strengthen resilience, and improve farmer livelihoods by focusing on soil health, biodiversity, water management, renewable energy, and efficient use of resources.
The paper highlights the adoption gap, especially in Sub‑Saharan Africa where many smallholder farmers practise some regenerative principles by default but lack the enabling conditions for large‑scale uptake. SNV’s approach emphasises participatory assessments, evidence generation, partnerships, landscape management, gender inclusion, and systems transformation. It provides practical examples of successful programmes across Africa and Asia, showing measurable progress in soil health, yields, climate resilience, income diversification, and sustainable market development.
This resource is intended for development practitioners, policymakers, donors, researchers, and private sector actors seeking proven strategies and insights for scaling regenerative agriculture. It offers a clear, context-aware framework that supports equitable, sustainable, and resilient agri‑food systems.
