Qanchary Llaqta in Peru: turning agricultural & forestry waste into clean energy
The Qanchary Llaqta project implemented by SNV Peru and funded by the Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Protection, Construction and Nuclear Safety of the German Government (BMUB) through its International Climate Initiative (IKI) will host a business roundtable to present its pilot projects on 17 February 2017 from 17:00-19:00 at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Lima.
Qanchary Llacta, formally called "Development of a Strategic Bioenergy Management Model", aims to promote the generation of biomass-based energy for isolated rural communities, strengthening the country's strategy in increasing access to clean and renewable energy and reducing the emission of greenhouse gases.
The word Qanchary Llacta comes from native language quechua and was used by the ancient Peruvians to refer to the relation between people and energy, specifically light.
To implement this project, SNV works in partnership with the national government of Peru and its subnational parties, universities and financial entities providing training on clean energy technologies and facilitating substantial changes on three fronts: (i) regulatory framework, (ii) financial framework and (iii) research and development in order to generate the necessary support for a solid value chain for the bioenergy market.
The Qanchary Llacta project promotes the implementation of pilot projects at different scales involving public and private investment in the regions of Cajamarca, Arequipa, Ucayali and Madre de Dios. The technologies promoted have been used extensively by SNV.
One type of technology is the bio-digester, a system that generates biogas from the organic residues of agricultural value chains and can be used both at the household level to provide clean energy for cooking, and at industrial level to generate electricity. A second technology being promoted is a gasifier that produces electricity using synthesis gas generated from biomass (including nut shells and coconuts) resulting from forestry operations.
The event will be co-hosted by the Embassies of the Netherlands and Germany in Peru and will be attended by the Minister of the Environment of Peru (supporting the project). Check out the event programme (in Spanish) here.
