Reconnecting the urban sphere with nature
On the 4th June, World Environment day was celebrated in Bangladesh under the banner of Switch Asia Network funded by the European Union (EU).
Bangladesh Youth Environmental Initiative (BYEI), under the leadership of OXFAM, together with other members of Switch Asia Network organized a competition among youth groups from different universities in Bangladesh, to come up with creative and sustainable solutions on how to keep the environment intact in an urban setting.
The day of the event started with a rally attended by members of various organisations and was followed by pitch presentations of the top 5 groups. Mahbub Ullah, Project Coordinator of “Sustainable production and consumption of tomato and mango processed products”, SNV spoke about the importance of preserving nature, and how the youth are the future of the country, and hence how the utmost responsibility lies on them. Other members who spoke at the event were Dr. Md. Khalid Hossain, from Oxfam, Sanjoy Kumar Thakur from ECOLEBAN, Md. Elias from Care Bangladesh and Mohammad Arju from Save Our Sea. The event ended with a prize giving ceremony followed by a promise to do our parts and collaboratively work towards a safer and greener environment.
