Energy and Environmental Partnership Trust Fund (EEP Africa)
ongoing
EEP is an open-ended clean energy financing facility with funding from Austria, Finland, NDF, and Switzerland
SNV, in partnership with Open Capital Advisors (OCA), implements the Energy and Environmental Partnership (EEP Africa) Trust Fund in 17 countries in Eastern and Southern Africa. Guided by a vision for a climate-resilient, zero-carbon future, the project will run for two years, from 2022 to 2026.
The Nordic Development Fund (NDF) hosts and manages the EEP Africa Trust Fund as an open-ended clean energy financing facility with funding from Austria, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, NDF, Norway, and Switzerland.
Approach
EEP Africa has been a driver of the clean energy transition in Africa since 2010, investing over EUR 50 million in almost 300 pioneering projects in Southern and East Africa. The immediate objective is to enhance clean energy access, development and investment, focusing on benefitting vulnerable and underserved groups.
The Fund's operations focus on three interrelated activities:
Financing for early-stage, innovative and locally-driven clean energy projects,
Business Development Services Investment Facilitation
Knowledge, Learning and Partnerships. Financing is provided through annual competitive calls for proposals and requires co-financing.
Successful companies receive targeted capacity building and investment support to mobilise follow-on financing. The Fund works closely with partners across the sector to share lessons learnt and expand the region's wider ecosystem for clean energy financing.
Objective
The overall goal of the EEP Africa Trust Fund is to contribute to sustainable and inclusive green growth and achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically:
SDG 1: No Poverty
SDG 5: Gender Equality
SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy
SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth
SDG 13: Climate Action
